"AmSurg Corp., through its subsidiaries, engages in the development, acquisition, and operation of ambulatory surgery centers in partnership with physician practice groups in the United States. Its surgery centers perform colonoscopy and other endoscopy procedures in the area of gastroenterology- cataracts and retinal laser surgery in the area of ophthalmology- and knee arthroscopy and carpal tunnel repair in the area of orthopedics. As of January 1, 2008, the company owned interest in 178 surgery centers in 32 states, including 123 centers performed gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures, 36 centers performed ophthalmology surgery procedures, 5 centers performed orthopedic procedures, and 12 centers were multi-specialty centers. It markets its surgery centers directly to patients- referring physicians- and third-party payors, including health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, other managed care organizations, and employers. AmSurg Corp. was founded in 1992 and is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee."
